#GuestPost |Busted: The Story Behind the Bad Guy by Michelle Khoury #Lovebooksgrouptours

eCover.jpgIn 2007 I took a Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Writing Course from the University of California at Irvine’s Extension Program. One of the first assignments was to plot a novel. While driving home from class, the idea of three people colliding over cocaine came to me. At the next class my professor and the other students loved the storyline and encouraged me to write the novel, but I had no clue about drugs or the drug world.

Through networking, I met a retired DEA Special Agent, and she shared her experiences. When she was in her mid-twenties, her husband died unexpectedly, as did her baby daughter a few months later. Devastated, she had no reason to live and feeling like she had nothing more to lose, she volunteered to go undercover with the Sinaloa Cartel in Southern California. Attractive and well endowed, she infiltrated the organization and became a top boss’ girlfriend, which enabled her to feed information to the DEA. Posing as a drug kingpin’s girlfriend was an incredibly dangerous job—if she’d been discovered, she would have been tortured, then boiled in acid—a practice known as making pozole.

She described her “boyfriend”: the cockiness, the foul language he used, his “rules do not apply to me” attitude, the way he walked, dressed, and treated others as his servants. He had no qualms about killing, kidnapping, or extortion; he’d do whatever it took to save his business.

These descriptions became the genesis for my antagonist, Miguel. The twenty-nine-year-old’s intimidating personality was easy to portray, and because his character was strong, his maliciousness permeated the entire story, even if he wasn’t in a scene.

What about you, dear reader? Have you encountered an individual who creeped you out? Have you sensed a stranger’s sinister soul? What did you do? Did you put your judgment aside and reach out, or retreat as fast as possible? I’d love to hear about your experiences.

Warmest Regards,

The Mid-Year Book Freak-Out Tag – 2018 edition

This is the first time I’ve done this tag and I am super excited to see what the first half of 2018. I know it’s not June anymore, but let’s just pretend for a second, ok? So far I’ve read just over 90 books and I am very close to my goal of 100 books for the year, a challenge that I need to elevate as soon as I’ll hit it.

The best book you’ve read so far in 2018

These books were fantastic and I continue to think about them. I gave them a solid 5 stars and recommend to everyone to read them because they’re that good!

Obviously reading is subjective and you might not love them as much as I do if at all…

Your favourite sequel of the year

A Court of Mist and Fury was such an incredible sequel, it has to be on this list! The story was so good, I cannot even begin to describe… have you read it? What did you think?

Another one for this list is Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence. I loved Red Sister, but the sequel was INSANEEEE!!

A new release that you haven’t read but really want to

I haven’t been very excited about a lot of books as of late it seems, but one of those is…

I had to have Jay Kristoff on my list! Duh! The book is arriving tomorrow actually.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

It has to be Wildcard by Marie Lu. I have been dying for this book from the minute I put Warcross down and I will read it the day it comes out because I need it in my life… preferably now!

Your biggest disappointment

I was so excited to read Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody, but it just did not work for me. I DNF-ed it halfway because I just couldn’t care about the characters and the plot wasn’t that exciting for me. I only kept turning the page because I was curious about minor plot points until I realised that I didn’t want to continue to waste my time. #unpopularopinion

Biggest surprise of the year

My biggest surprise for a debut author goes to Samantha Heuwagen! I loved Dawn among the stars and to be honest I didn’t expect to fall in love with her book so much. I am dying to read an ARC of book 2 (hint, hint!)

I was also very impressed with Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart; I didn’t know what to expect from it and during first 2 chapters I felt pretty meh about the story, but starting chapter 3 I was hooked and read it in two days! So, so good!

Favourite new to you or debut author

My newest favourite authors are Mark Lawrence and Stuart Turton! I would honestly read their groceries list.

Favourite debut authors: Liz and Katharine Corr, Alexandra Cristo and Samantha Heuwagen; these ladies have some mad writing skills!

Your new fictional crush

Rhys from ACOTAR series!! He is there with Dimitri Belikov now.

New favourite character

Nona Grey from Book of the Ancestor series by Mark Lawrence, especially in Grey Sister!

A book that made you cry

I don’t really cry when reading books… closest I’ve been probably with ACOTAR?!

A book that made you happy

I don’t read a lot of happy books it seems… but I could go with Unfed by Kirsty McKay. That book made me laugh and I am gutted there isn’t a third book coming!

Your favourite book to movie adaptation that you’ve seen this year

Uhm… Don’t really watch a lot of movies, but I did saw Red Sparrow, the movie adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jason Matthews. Have you seen it? I liked it although quite different than the novel.

Favourite book post you’ve done this year

Uhm… #T5W: Children’s Books to Read as an Adult written in March, and the reason why this is my favourite is that it made me think of books long forgotten and I love it for that.

The most beautiful book you’ve bought/received this year

Where do I even start…

These are a few of the most gorgeous books that I have bought this year…

What are some books you need to read by the end of the year

So, so many… my TBR is going to kill me one day, I swear! There are quite a few books that I would love to read by the end of the year…

Have you read any of these? Would you agree with what’s on my list?

I am not going to tag anyone, because I am assuming a lot of you already have done this tag, so instead leave your links to this tag down below so I can read your answers!

The Seven Deadly Sins Tag

Good morning my lovelies! Autumn is finally here and, yes, I am very excited about it. It is by far one of my favourite seasons so I am looking forward to curl up to a book all wrapped up in blankets and sipping hot tea… *daydreaming*

In the meantime, I thought it would be fun to do a tag so you guys can know me a little more, so when someone shared this here I thought I’d give it a go.

1. Greed~ What is your most inexpensive book? What is your most expensive book?38988My most inexpensive book would be Awakening (Chasing yesterday) by Robin Wasserman for which I paid only £0.50 at Oxfam bookshop. The most expensive book I bought would be Infinite Jest by David Fos2457487ter Wallace for which I paid £11 at Waterstones five years ago. I still have not finished reading it because it’s huge (1089 pages)!

2. Wrath~ What author do you have a love/hate relationship with?
I don’t really have anything against authors even if I do hate their book so much that I’d like to burn them, and if we’re gonna talk about love we’d be here all night, so… next question!

3. Gluttony~ What book have you devoured over and over again with no shame?345627
There are a few books actually, but Vampire academy surely comes to mind as it is one of my favourite YA series ever! I also read the Twilight books a few times as well, just because I can and have no shame. I don’t re-read that much lately because 75% of my bookcase contains unread books and I try to dedicate my time to read those ones unless I really want to feel something special, then I re-read.

4. Sloth~ What book have you neglected reading due to laziness?
Uh… I have a lot of books that I gave collected during massive book hauls so the list, again, would be too big to even start.

5. Pride~ What book do you talk about most in order to sound like an intellectual reader?
I don’t really need to do that because I am already amazing *flips hair*

6. Lust~ What attributes do you find attractive in male characters?
Smart, humane, broody. I do like my fictional men broody and aloof. The perfect guy is definitely Dimitri Belikov out of the Vampire Academy. He is also a God. 13519397
7. Envy~ What book would you most like to receive as a gift?
This obviously changes, but I would like to receive Throne of glass by Sarah J. Maas. I started listening to the audiobook but could not stand the voice, so gave up halfway through, but I’d like to read the book.

I hope you guys enjoyed this tag.
I am going to nominate to pick up the Tag:

1. Dogs or Cats or Hamsters and Why?

Cats. I always loved cats. There is something about cats that draws me in. For me they’re not just fluffy balls of fur that I love to play with, but I fell like I actually have a connection with them. Yeah, call me crazy, you wouldn’t be the only one! 😉

2. If you could live in any period and any place in time when and where would it be?

If I could live in any time period, I would choose to live in England in the 19 Century in  my own amazing version for Pride and Prejudice.

3. What is the last book you hated and why?

I’ve not read a lot of hateful books lately, but I remember starting The fearless by Emma Pass that I almost hurled across the room. I was so utterly disappointed in this book, I haven’t even finished reading it! However, nothing compares with: Life after life by Kate Atkinson that I actually reviewed last year. I hated this book with a passion. I’ve read this book as part of the book club and needless to say, I HATED it! If you want to read that review, click here.

4. Favourite author and favourite book (not necessarily by the same author)?

Favorite author it will forever be Margaret Mitchell and Jane Austen is more or less on the same par so it is really hard to decide. Struggling a bit to think of a favorite book as I could list so many depending on the genre. I will probably go with two classics because I just cannot decide: Gone with the wind by Margaret Mitchell and Crime and punishment by Dostoievski. If we are thinking of YA, then my all time favorite is Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead!

5. What is something you wish people knew about you?

I stutter sometimes. Unless you know me really well, you wouldn’t quite realise that I have a stutter sometimes.

6. How long have you been blogging?

I’ve actually just hit 9 years of having this blog, however I’ve been quite rubbish in keeping it updated until recently.

7. What is your favorite type of character in a book?

Bad-ass female characters. Always. I always enjoy a strong female character that takes no bullshit from anyone, such as Rose from Vampire Academy.

8. What is your favorite TV show?

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but when I do, I am following Jessica Jones, Shadowhunters and I was watching The OA at some point as well, but I stopped from some reason. I totally loved Stranger things so I am looking forward to the next season. I totally love Game of thrones.

9. What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Halloween –  too many reasons to list, but amongst them: the time of the year when it’s ok to display a cranium (plastic one for those of you worrying…), read and watch creepy books/movies, etc.

10. What 3 famous/fictional people, living or dead, would you want at your fantasy dinner party?

Dorian Grey, Mr Darcy and Rose Hathaway from VA. Can you imagine these three sitting down and playing nice? Don’t think so!

11. What’s your pet peeve(s)?

There are a lot of things that annoy me, but nothing annoys me more than a clingy, wingy, weak-ass female protagonist who does not know how to live without her love interest that she is going to fix! Is he abusive, hurtful, etc, she can fix it! Bitch, please!

My Questions: 1. What hyped up book you read and you hated? 2. If you could have a superpower, which one would it by and why? 3. If you were stranded in a remote, dangerous place, which character would you call for help? 4. What is your favourite fiction genre and why? 5. What’s your favourite book quote? 6. If you could change your current career, what would you choose? Why? 7. If you’d have the opportunity to meet your favourite author, which one would you pick? 8. Which three traits of a main character you think are most important? Why?  9. If I would build a time machine and you would have one ride and one ride only, where would you go and when?  10. Which book that you read this year was your favourite? Why this one? 11. What is your favourite movie adaptation from a book? Why?

That’s it folks! Hope you enjoyed finding a little bit more about me. If you don’t follow me already on my Social Media, you’re going on the naughty step! Just kidding, I will actually release Ramsey’s wolves on you! *Evil laugh*

Kidding…. or am I?

Abibliophobia or something like that

I love books and I love reading them. I will buy new books in whatever format, then still visit the library and return 3 books and come home with 5 more tiles which I like to pile up and have them available next to me just like the image above. I have a book shelf, but I prefer to have most of the unread ones by my side, it’s comfortable.

I also like buying lots of books even when I have lots of other books unread, and I know a lot of other book devourers out there do that too and for a long time I was do wondering if there is a word for that. Apparently, Abibliophobia is the fear of running out of reading material. Obviously an unfounded fear as I always have a book somewhere that I can pick up. If I don’t have a paperback, then I have a gazillion on the Kindle app on my phone and a charger to make sure I don’t run out of battery whilst reading.

I’ve already selected a next book (Plague nation by Ashley Parker), although I am reading some other three or four… I wonder what the word for reading-more-than-a-book-at-a-time is?! 💭

Good night! 🌙

Suicide Squad new trailer looks Amazeballs!

Behold awesomeness and what I think it will be the sexiest movie this year! I absolutely love what I am seeing so far, the cast is amazing, the lines really seem to fit the characters without being cheesy and I am sooo excited for this that I can barely keep still.

This movie seems to have it all: atypical heroes, potential for a really dark and gripping storyline, and most importantly… A NEW JOKER! Are you joking me?!!! This is awesome!!! Plus that, I will definitely enjoy watching on the big screen my all time favourite female villain: Harley fucking Quinn! Forget about Wonder Woman in `Batmas vs Superman`, we’ll have Harley! Omg, I need more exclamations marks in here!!!!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Omg, are you just not excited? This looks amazingly bad-ass! I am totally in love with this trailer and I am looking forward to seeing the movie next year. I really hope that the movie will be good as I am a sucker for zombies and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books ever, so this should be my dream come true. This movie coming out in 2016 is starring: Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Bella Heathcote, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith, Charles Dance, Lena Headey. This movie is based on the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a 2009 parody novel by Seth Grahame-Smith.

Hopefully the movie will be as good as these bad-ass snippets.

Are you excited?
